Musician, music producer, composer, and engineer Frankie hales from the Atlanta metro.
He first learned the craft from his father Jessie Carlton, touring guitarist for Stax-Volt soul pioneer William Bell, then steeped that knowledge in the creative vibrancy of contemporary Southside hip-hop.
“My father had all the analog guru tricks in the audio recording field,” says Frankie, who went on to use Jesse’s “cool daisy-chaining theories” to create and shape a host of unique sounds. From the beginning, Carlton has employed a signature blend of analog engineering methods and innovations that round out the sound completely, building a rich and ear-friendly tone that just can’t be matched by pure digital.
For Frankie, the production studio itself is an instrument, and he plays it as deftly and intuitively as any virtuoso plays a violin. It’s a sense of immediately knowing what needs to be done to a song when you hear it, then feeling your fingers doing what needs to be done to get there, which only comes from living the work, day after day, from childhood up.
Frankie’s clients are involved in many styles of music, including hip-hop, country, jazz, folk, and rock, so his musical compositions and his engineering techniques span a wide range of genres.
